We are living in 21st century now and the degrading condition of the environment is an alarm for all of us. Since the population is increasing the amount of waste is also increasing which clearly indicates that in coming years if waste management is not taken care of it may lead to something very harmful. As per the surveys, major number of waste is being produced by the industries and to manage this waste proper disposal is required. With new technologies in the market, country has come up with many new ideas to take care of waste disposal. 

We have always been taught that we all have some social responsibilities and have to take care of our environment and surroundings but we are not fulfilling them. So, to support E-waste management and get the waste disposal into action, the term EPR was issued by government. EPR stands for “Extended Producer Responsibility”. The words itself explains that it is an added responsibility for the producers.  The producer has to take charge of the E-waste disposal in a way that it does not bring any harm to our nature. Aside this, producers are also subjected to conduct 2 seminars in a year regarding the awareness of E-waste, its effects and management. And has to submit self-declaration on compliance to ROHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances).

The term EPR was first coined in the early 90s, it is intended to provide incentive to the manufacturers for designing such products, which can be used for longer time and are recyclable. Basically, it is a strategy executed for the welfare of environment. EPR aims to reduce waste generation and hence to protect the environment. Now, you all might be wondering that how EPR does this? EPR makes producers responsible to build the products that are useful and recyclable for long term. The more will be the life of a product the less it will convert into scrap. As a result, less waste will be generated and problem of its disposal will also be fixed. This also results in the production of reliable products with safety of environment.

According to Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) is a strategy for environmental protection, for which the key is handed to manufacturers for extending the life of products. Its goal is to make producers accountable for the environmental influence of their products throughout the product creation journey.
